Hoffmann Architects + Engineers provided Fusco Corporation with consultation services for a new 150,000 sf clinical laboratory at 55 Park Street, at the west end of the downtown Air Rights parking garage. The design architect was Svigals + Partners, in association with Behnisch Architects. Fusco Corporation, as developer, is leasing the complex to Yale-New Haven Hospital.
The seven-story structure provides a necessary link from the Air Rights garage to the Yale Cancer Center via a bridge across Frontage Road. The facade consists primarily of glass curtain wall, with roof-level screen walls to mask mechanical equipment. On grade below the elevated garage, a new loading dock provides off-street delivery of medical supplies to this building and to Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven. Lobby and retail occupy the first floor, with the upper floors dedicated to clinical laboratories supporting the Cancer Hospital.
Hoffmann reviewed documents and drawings and advised on waterproofing, roof, and curtain wall design, as well as conducted on-site review of the installation and testing of these envelope elements. The project achieved LEED Gold Certification.
