Following the tragic collapse in 2021 of the Champlain Towers Condominium building in southern Florida, Jersey City responded to concerns by residents about the safety of the city’s high-rise buildings by enacting a facade inspection ordinance.
Beginning in 2021, buildings greater than six stories tall, as well as masonry-clad buildings over four stories in height, must undergo facade inspection by a licensed architect or engineer every five years. Reports are due by the end of the year, and property owners are responsible for promptly carrying out recommended repairs.
In addition, the law requires that concrete buildings over six stories undergo a structural inspection every ten years. Repairs must be completed according to the timeline recommended by the architect or engineer conducting the inspection.
