Mount Holyoke College
Campus Building Envelope Condition Assessments
Founded by Mary Lyon in 1837 as Mount Holyoke Female Seminary, Mount Holyoke College is a liberal arts college for women that was the first member of the Seven Sisters colleges. Mount Holyoke received its collegiate charter in 1888 as Mount Holyoke Seminary and College and became Mount Holyoke College in 1893. In anticipation of major building rehabilitations, the college administration retained Hoffmann Architects + Engineers to assess the condition of roofs and facades across the twenty oldest buildings on campus, dating from 1837 to 1967.
Hoffmann’s comprehensive assessment provided Mount Holyoke College with documentation of current conditions, anticipated remaining service life for building enclosure components, prioritized repair and replacement needs, and estimated construction costs. Based on the results of these findings, our design professionals provided guidance to the college in developing an appropriate plan of action to restore the historic building stock of this notable institution.
